October, 2009 A Virtual World for Teaching about Civilization and Conflict Resolution
Author, and painter of the 3d scenes: W. David Hoisington, Ph. D.
"A Clash of Cultures" is a revolutionary concept in teaching the history of Western civilization without the need for killing. The blood shed is replaced with cultural conquest and thus this simulation can be used in schools and family settings. Two years of pre-design research are behind this virtual world project, plus all the research that is on this website. As the name, A Clash of Cultures, implies the virtual world places participants into an environment where there are many cultures. These cultures will all be striving for domination over technology developments, resource control, and land expansion. This will lead to a "clash" between cultures. The participants will need to decide how to react to such a "clash". It will be a world filled with "real" people who are in control of their avatar (a computer generated person). This avatar will have many choices to make and all actions will relate to the development of their unique conflict resolution skills according to the choices made. Families, or classrooms, or even entire schools, can develop their own communites and learn what it takes to build a civilization while also resolving conflict without killing.
This is a very large and complex project. If you would like to volunteer to help then click on the email button and contact us.
We are working with the V-3d simulation engine to help develop this virtual world. The V-3d product is under development and needs support. Help with developing their product will help get this virtual world get built and thus help to move toward a culture of compassion.
Below are some photos of 3d comupter generated terrain and objects that serve as examples of what we hope the project will eventually look like. These are made using 3d generated plants native to the region. Eventually we will have terrain that is based on actual terrain. Below the terrain is only a artistic example of a river bank, a mountain spring and a desert similar to the region.
In addition the simulation will have buildings and avatars wearing clothing that approximates the time period. Below are some examples.
