After one has practiced the six steps for developing strong compassion, and has begun to experience this strong compassion as a way of being, then it becomes possible to experience radiant compassion. Radiant compassion can bring about the relief of suffering in another within 15 minutes of meeting the person. It means that people can experience your compassionate presence simply by sharing space with you. The question you then ask every day is, "Am I holding the compassion presence (space) for others?" What is listed here are the features needed for the development of radiant compassion. Except for the first one, they are not listed in priority. These features apply to personal experiences and to holding a radiant compassion space for another. The charateristics of empathy, and developed empathy, apply to all the features below.
Compassion: Know your own understanding and practice of compassion toward yourself and toward all sentient life. Understand the characteristics of radiant compassion.
Responsibility: Know your own responibility to the moment and the possibility of compassion that is always present.
Calling: Listen for the "signs" that indicate the time is right for radiant compassion to occur, and also listen for the "signs" that say "not now".
Unknowing: Let go of the need to know and learn to be comfortable with sitting in a space of unknowing.
Empty Self: Let go of the desires, cravings, and agendas associated with the self. Learn to be empty to the moment.
Suffering: Learn to sit with suffering while breathing in a quiet peace. Embrace forgiveness and patience.
Stillness: Find that intensely quiet still place within and learn to sit there.
Lightness: Let go and enjoy, show gratitude, smile, and give praise often.
Meaning: Every experience with radiant compassion is rich with meaning. Take the time to process, to find personal meaning, and to share.
See the "Helping Relationship Tree" and its links to advanced levels of compassion.
Humility: You are part of a process. Feel the "awe" of that process and show gratitude.
