Core Concepts in the Science of Compassion

In the development of the science of compassion, and the teaching of compassion, there are underlying assumptions about the nature of compassion. These assumptions are a necessary step in beginning to develop a science of compassion.
Compassion is such a popular term in our vernacular that it comes with cultural myths. These cultural myths are sometimes in contradiction to the underlying assumptions. Coming to an understanding of these cultural myths is a part of teaching and developing compassion.
If we seek to live a compassionate life then we should also seek to explore how compassion can fit into answering some basic philosophical questions. These would be "What is the nature of our existence?", "What is reality?", "How do we know?"' and "What is justice?".
Compassion is tied to the relief of suffering which is directly linked to how we help others. How we help others involves the "helping relationship" and its connections to the relief of suffering. Examination of the helping relationship and its links to compassion can aid in the development of strong compassion.
