Title: Sacred Passage: How to provide fearless, compassionate care for the dying
Author: Margaret Coberly, Ph.D., R.N. Publisher/Date: Shambhala, 2002
Book Summary: This book seeks to present an application of Tibetan Buddhist concepts, and Transpersonal concepts, to the dying process. There are excellent sections describing the inadequate training of people in the medical profession with regard to care for the dying. The Buddist information is very basic with a focus on "the mind" as existing beyond death. There is information on how "the mind" prepares for death and guidelines for care providers. The sections on Transpersonal care giving contain some nice pearls of wisdom about siting with empathy and compassion during the dying process.
Comments: This book is well written and very easy to understand. The concepts are largely basic ones and the author uses stories to help illustrate the main issues. The application of information from the Tibetan Book of the Dead is weak, but this is complimented by some strong, and practical, Transpersonal information. There might be some question as to whether the foundations of Buddhism and the foundations of Transpersonal Psychology actually meet on the same page. This is a good book for beginners who are interested in these topics.
